Cancer diagnosis and treatments today are undergoing deep-reaching changes. Therapeutic strategies, until recently, could be summarised as ablation of the diseased organs and destruction of cancerous cells, often leading to serious unwanted effects that weaken the patient or limit the efficiency of the cancer treatment. But innovative approaches are emerging. They target cell functions and its close environment.

La cancérologie connaît des transformations radicales. Les stratégies thérapeutiques se sont longtemps résumées à l'ablation des organes touchés et à la destruction des cellules malades, avec souvent de graves effets secondaires qui affaiblissaient le patient ou limitaient l’efficacité du traitement. Des approches innovantes apparaissent aujourd'hui. Elles ciblent directement le fonctionnement de la cellule et son environnement immédiat.

En janvier dernier nous avons fait une enquête auprès des abonnés à notre newsletter. 727 personnes ont répondu, succès inespéré qui témoigne de l'attachement de nos lecteurs à leur revue... The London Olympic Games gave the world an opportunity to behold something previously unseen: an amputee athlete, Oscar Pistorius, crouching in the starting blocks alongside the world’s greatest runners. Such a sight raised an unprecedented question: are new generation prostheses going to give an unfair advantage to certain athletes? Technologies are now allowing amazing performances. But is technological progress advancing social integration for the disabled?

In 2011, Rodney Brossart, a farmer from Lakota (North Dakota) was arrested by the county police. Brossart, who was armed, was in a dispute with the authorities over the ownership of six cows and refused to turn over the animals that had meandered onto his ranch property. After his arrest, Brossart charged the police with violation of privacy. Indeed, the police team had arrested him helped with a “Predator” unmanned drone, provided by the Homeland Security Department. This observation vehicle had played a crucial role to locate the suspect inside his own house and assist the policemen during the assault. However, no trial court is ever likely to hear this case. The police officers involved had a warrant and could easily prove that they used the drone for surveillance purpose only, and not, as claimed by the suspect, to create a ground for prosecution after the facts. This was the very first encounter, and certainly not the last, between an “unmanned aerial vehicle” (UAV) and the US justice.

En termes d'intimité, mais aussi d'action à distance, il annonce une rupture dont il est impossible d’envisager toutes les conséquences. Le droit tente tant bien que mal d’encadrer cette extension sans fin des limites du possible.

Avec ses nouveaux millionnaires et une classe moyenne en pleine expansion, la Chine fait rêver les grandes marques de luxe. Mais les embûches sont nombreuses et obligent à revoir bon nombre de pratiques, de la création au marketing. Avec, en ligne de mire, une question de fond: le marché chinois va-t-il renouveler la conception occidentale du luxe?
