BIO

Alain Desrosières is a member of the Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (INSEE), and of the Centre Alexandre Koyré d'Histoire des Sciences, both in Paris. He is a statistician and a specialist in the history and sociology of statistics.
He is the author of The Politics of Large Numbers. A History of Statistical Reasoning (Harvard University Press 1998), of "Comparing the incomparable : the sociology of statistics", in : J.P. Touffut (ed) : Augustin Cournot : Modelling Economics, (Edward Elgar, 2007), pp. 116-143, and of : "Words and Numbers. For a Sociology of the Statistical Argument", in : A.R. Saetnan, H.M. Lomell, S. Hammer (eds) : The Mutual Construction of Statistics and Society, (Routledge, 2011), pp. 41-63.
He published in French two volumes of selected papers : Pour une sociologie historique de la quantification, et Gouverner par les nombres (Mines ParisTech, 2008).

Les grandes crises sont bien sûr des moments où les statistiques sont intensément mobilisées pour exprimer la gravité de la situation. Mais elles sont aussi des moments de grands débats, lors desquels le rôle de l'Etat dans la régulation et le pilotage de l'économie est profondément repensé. A chacune de ces crises correspond l'émergence de façons nouvelles de quantifier le monde social. De nouveaux modèles d'action impliquent de nouvelles variables et de nouveaux systèmes d'observation.

They are also moments of heated debate where the state's role in regulating and steering the economy is questioned. Each major crisis is witness to the emergence of new ways of quantifying the social order, implying new models of action, variables, and systems of observation.
